DESIGNER LIVING ROOM STYLE via 55 Downing Street

Designer living rooms all have that special style that make them work. I want to share a few favorite living spaces by celebrity interior designers that all have that “je ne sais quoi” or mysterious quality that make them extraordinary.

I will also divulge a few tips and tricks for achieving these designer looks at home after breaking down each winning element.

Suzanne Kasler used a neutral palette in her living room featured in Architectural Digest. I find this room very interesting with many seating areas featuring stylish accent chairs. The furnishings range drastically in style and era but are united by the same soothing palate.

Mary McDonald designed this living room around the client’s heirloom Persian rug, which inspired the color palette for the den. McDonald envisioned a “a hip, cozy library with a fireplace and television.”

This space is united in blue and white with traditional upholstery,  interesting photography art that highlights to small dashed of red also found in the rug.

Designer Jeffrey Bilhuber brings a mod version of 19th-century eclecticism to the storied townhouse. The jewel tones and various patterns are set off by the light neutral walls.

This mix of modern and traditional is united with contemporary art.

Miles Redd created a color wonderland for his Houston clients. This living room is another example of mixing both modern and traditional in one room design.

All the furniture and upholstery is pretty traditional in style as well as fabric choices. Meanwhile, the bold colors really ramp up the modern vibe in conjunction with contemporary sculptures and art.

In Costa Mesa, California this home owned by designers Marc and Melissa Palazzo, feature a pair of matching sofas which ground this light and airy space. The bold upholstery, featuring a brown-and-white diamond grid, anchors the couple’s eclectic collection of furniture and objects.

Tips for creating a Designer Living Room:

-Do not be afraid of color in your room with textiles or walls.

-Unite different furniture styles with the use of a common upholstery color.

-Add a bold color as an accent with pillows, flowers and accessories.

-Mix art of different styles for a more eclectic look.

-Create multiple seating and conversation areas in a room.

-Float your furniture in the middle of a room as well as the perimeter. Use you space wisely to suit the rooms shape.

-Mix it up with a pattern on your upholstery. Bold geometrics can transform an otherwise boring space or piece of furniture.

-Have plenty of soft lamp lighting. Overhead cans often create unflattering light while making your ceilings look like swiss cheese.

-Buy what you love and you will always find a spot for it.
