Scenes from Newport, Rhode Island
I just returned from a few days in Newport, Rhode Island. I was greeted with colorful artwork in the airport to start the trip off right.
It was my first visit there and I was WOWed with the homes and architecture. The Newport Mansions are of course awe inspiring. The wealth in America long ago was astounding. The “Robber Barons” certainly knew how to spend it.
The Clarke Cooke House is a staple in Newport. We ended up there multiple times. I even taught the bartender how to make a Paloma.
there are an abundance of tacky souvenir shops….
Easton’s Beach was full of surfers. This is the start of The Cliff Walk. We walked the whole thing and it was such a treat except the blister on my foot because I walked the 7 miles in birkenstocks…
loved this pink awning
This house was not on the tour but a massive mansion (5th largest in Newport) with a Sanford & Son yard, teepee and all…it was a Gray Gardens kinda feel. I figured out later that this is Seaview Terrace also known as the Carey Mansion featured in the cult classic Dark Shadows. It had been moved to Newport from Dupont Circle in DC. That is crazy!!!!
We toured The Breakers
Del’s is a local favorite. Very yummy!
and The Elms
I snuck an interior shot and got busted…but it was worth it for this ceiling!!!!
The Elms stables….
Drinks at Castle Hill Inn Lawn is a must. We caught the most gorgeous sunset….
I complained at our hotel so many times they sent us wine…ooops.
no time for the interior home tour (1.5 hour guided only) but Doris Duke’s Rough Point is supposed to be amazing…
the gardens are beautiful….
I also made a late afternoon run to Green Animals Topiary Garden. It is about 30 minutes from Newport.
Our last night dinner was at The Mooring. The food and the view were excellent.
We met people at the Skybar for drinks. I LOVE the Dorothy Draper- esque interior.
Back to the airport with more lovely art…more on this artist soon…
as if we had not had enough lobster, lobster rolls and the like…Johnny Rockets was our airport parting meal…
I created a Pinterest board with great info on Newport if you are planning a trip. It has several terrific travel guides.
FYI- We stayed at the Viking Hotel where my husband had a work conference. I would defiantly stay at The Attwater (fab interiors) or 41 North (on the water) on future trips…if I did not have a mansion….
