I popped uptown to see the Americana Show by Stephen Wilson presented by The New Gallery of Modern Art on my way back from Charleston. I was blown away by the detail and scale of this series. See more of the intricate process.

The artist and family in front of this wondrous feat.

Here is a detail of the 2″ blocks that comprise many of the pieces in the a combination of Hermes scarves, embroidery and 3 – D Printing.

 I am wowed by the innovation and sheer amount of work it takes to put together these pieces. 

 

 “The medium is the message. There is a long list of artists that create art using traditional means. However, Stephen Wilson is anything but traditional. The medium used for his pieces is predominantly fabric and thread, combined with sculptural 3D printing, laser engraving, and painting. When you examine one of his pieces closely you will notice that each line and element is created with thread on top of luxurious fabrics. Some of his pieces contain millions of embroidery stitches and take hundreds of hours to create. Fashion influence is prevalent in his pieces. While I have been in awe of Stephen’s work for a while, his latest series that is just launching really captured me.  We clearly have the same passion for fashion.  I am coveting one of his new box series that is comprised of embroidered boxes from luxury fashion brands.  

Hermes or rainbow Valentino are my absolute favorites. I cannot wait to go to the studio to see them all in person.
