One Room Challenge Fall 2018: Kickoff
As you may have read last week on Instagram, I am participating in the Fall 2018 One Room Challenge.
I am finally completing a kitchen addition and renovation of the rear portion of our home. It a BIG project for which I am praying all goes correctly because the time is NOW.
Are you not familiar?
The One Room Challenge™, currently in its fourteenth season, is a widely anticipated biannual event every April and October. Each round, twenty design bloggers take the challenge and transform a space. Every Wednesday, the designers document their process while sharing their sources and professional advice over the six weekly posts.
So this one is the start to the One Room Challenge as well as the renovation my childhood home where moved in in March. See the whole house and saga start HERE.
Needless to say, we are in dire help of some remodeling and decorating. I am trying to preserve the integrity of this wonderful home that my parents painstakingly built in 1963 yet make it my own.
So here are the before images of the kitchen, breakfast room, laundry room and porch that are the area I am currently tackling… in addition to the rear view and gardens that I am trying to revive as well:
So that is where we started… and in the interest of full disclosure I started this about three months ago… and it is a darn good thing I did because we are still going to need all the stars to align for this to finish in time.
June 6th we broke ground…
June 19th…porch as gone… messes were made
July 9th… lots of mud and a hole
oh and a port a potty too…
July 21st… BAD NEWS! Ground is softer than anticipated. We need 15 helical piers to support the structure. A fun big purchase:(… oh and they cannot start for 4 weeks. Crapola.
I was sad and left town for 3 weeks of horse shows.
I returned home to piers and a foundation on August 17th.
August 22nd walls are happening.
August 28th
August 31st progress…
September 21st week progress…
September 24th cleaning up and getting ready for…
This week…We have floors going in.
Tune in next Wednesday to see my plan and the next 5 weeks to see my progress (and say a little prayer).
Follow along the other participants too!

That’s a big renovation! How exciting! I love that you bought your childhood home, you must have wonderful memories of the house and will build many more.

Oof – I just read Week 3 and was like, wait a minute, how are they doing all of this in 6 weeks!?!? This post cleared all of that up for me. People too often think renovations happen in a 30 minute time crunch. What a project! Echo-ing all the other comments to say it’s amazing you are living in your childhood home again. Can’t wait to see how this goes!

Only on HGTV can a house be built in a week. This is a long labor of love happening real time. Fingers crossed for completion on time.
