Jewelry Love: Brass Thread
I came across this brand on Instagram and had to know more.
This cute couple is on fire with their unique jewels.
They are the perfect combination of craft and cool.
Houston, Texas
What is your training?
Brass Thread is designed by myself, Jessica, and my husband, Jason. I have a BFA from Pratt Institute in NY, with a concentration in Fashion Design, I was accepted early and went when I was 17.
The Lilah Gabriel name associated with Brass Thread is a combination of our middle names.
My husband, Jason, apprenticed and worked as a bench jeweler and learned mostly through trade.
What inspires you and your designs?
We are heavily inspired through our heritages and travels. The concept for Brass Thread started on a trip we took to Mexico when we saw Huichol sculpture and fell in love with it. We wanted to create something wearable that was just as colorful and beautiful.
What is your favorite piece? pictures if possible…
That is a very hard question!! We love every single piece. My personal favorites are the pieces that are so outrageously colorful. Jason loves the really intricately detailed pieces.
How has the your area influenced your work?
Houston is a great city to be in right now since it is growing so much. New buildings, restaurants, shops, museums, are opening all the time. People are moving here from all over the world and it is a very international city. We find that part completely inspiring because things are constantly in motion we are being introduced to new people and new cultures daily even while we are not traveling.
What is your favorite restaurant in Houston?
There are so many! Houston is known for some of the best restaurants. I would have to say a mutual favorite of ours is Uchi.
What is your favorite cocktail?
I am a tequila girl and Jason loves whiskey.
How do you balance personal life and work?
Since we work together and we are also married, it is all about balance for us. We have had an agreement since the start, if it stops being something we love to do, then we stop doing it. However, we are both designers and this is what we love so our work really doesn’t feel so much like typical work all the time, which helps to balance.
Dream trip?
We would love to do a full Mediterranean tour all in one trip.
Dream commission?
A dream commission for us would be to work with a major apparel designer/brand on a capsule collection (i.e. Jeremy Scott, Mary Katrantzou, Wildfox).
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I love to give colorful and interesting baked goods from small bakeries.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Jennifer Louise Martin from London.
Her work is amazing and definitely an inspiration for us.
What is your most treasured possession?
Our little cockapoo, Audrey 🙂
What are you reading?
We have not had time to read due to our busy jewelry company! However, when we do have moment, Jason is usually reading some form of scifi/fantasy novel and I will be reading a random fiction novel that I have been meaning to read for months, next on the list is The Goldfinch.
What are you listening to?
We have a huge variety of stations on Pandora from Buena Vista Social Club to Outkast.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
We love your blog!
A few of our favorite publications/blogs are Nylon,
Paper, V, Oyster Magazine, i-D, leblogdebetty.com, thebusinessoffashion.com, vogue.co.uk.
