Iris Apfel…A Rare Bird Indeed!
Iris Apfel is a style icon! I hope I can be as divinely chic when I am 90+…or even now.
HERE is a great article from the NY Times. She is apparently tickled by her new found pop stardom.
She was the founder of Old World Weavers textile company with her husband until they retired in1992. She was involved in the design of the White House for 9 presidents.
"A maverick fashion icon who may pair a pink Krizia twinset with a Qing dynasty embroidered skirt, or a fur-trimmed Dior evening coat with jeans, she burst into black type in 2005, when an exhibition of her colorful and extravagantly accessorized wardrobe was a sensation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Entitled “Rara Avis” (Latin for rare bird), the show transformed Apfel into what she cheekily calls a “geriatric starlet.”
A great post by Into the Gloss highlights her current work including HSN, Eye-Bobs and MAC cosmetics collection.
Most of the pictures below are from her spread in Architectural Digest.
Her great Q and A is HERE.
I hope you enjoy her amazing design and zany style as much as I do.
A minimalist, she is not.
I bet those racks are filled with pieces of heaven.
J'adore!
For MAC cosmetics…
The matching glasses…
So Chic…
Over-jeweled! I love it.
In honor of this post I purchased her book. I thought it was a necessary thing.
From Barbie to Iris in a day…what a 180 degree turn.

Thank you for such a great posting! Iris Apfel is a hero! I have been a textile designer since the 1980's in NYC and I wish there were more people with her sensibility! She is ahead of the curve! I enjoy your blog!

Hope to meet this woman some day. Might happen as I live in Austin where she lectures at UT.
