Creative Conversation: Printfresh with Amy Voloshin

I am so excited to share a look into the world of creative, Amy Voloshin, founder of Printfresh.

Amy is the wildly creative brain behind the brand she and her husband, Leo, run together. We got to know each other at The Southern C Summit.

I am in awe of the business they have built.  They manage thousands of sku’s and release new product monthly all while designing each pattern in their Philadelphia headquarters. The brand is proudly one of the early size inclusive adopters with sizes XXS to 6X.

Enjoy getting to know the amazing Amy.

What is your training?

How did you get started from small to the brand you are now?

I always loved art, design and fashion. I went to the Rhode Island School of Design thinking I would do graphic design or photography, but ended up studying textile design. I interned a lot through college and learned so much about the industry, as well as the nature of having a small business. I went on to work at Urban Outfitters and Free People as they were launching their first store and catalog, so that experience really applies to what we are doing these days with our growing business. I had a small textile design business for 10 years before launching our own product line – so I was lucky to have team members that I had been working with for a long time join me on this new endeavor of starting a brand.

What inspires you and your designs?

I love to travel and find so much inspiration from my trips. I’m currently in Japan, where stickers on a street pole, food wrappers and decorative objects in museums can all act as inspiration. For the concepts of our designs, I like to pair up things you wouldn’t typically expect or find anywhere else. I think this gives our line a unique look.

What is your current favorite piece?

I love the Bagheera Main Street Dress – I wear it all the time! And the Bagheera Blush Robe is my all time go-to.

How has the Philly – the area influenced your designs?

Outside of Philly we have so much nature. I grew up on a farm, so I’m always influenced by animals and plant life. Philadelphia is also a very quirky city, there’s a lot of fun design influences and modern art happening.

What is your favorite restaurant in Philly?

Ooooh, so hard to say – we have so many good ones. I especially like Laser Wolf

and Wm. Mulherin’s Sons. And I think the team at Lloyd make the best cocktails in the city – and luckily it’s just around the corner from my house and it’s incredibly casual. Oh,  and Say No More is also great and right next to the office – their fried cauliflower is amazing.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Negroni

How do you balance personal life and work?

I work a lot having a small business, but I’m also really committed to having fun and traveling. My kids are getting older now (they are 10 and 12) so they are becoming easy to travel with which is fun to spend time with them and catch up in a way we don’t get to during busy school and work weeks.

Joining groups like The Southern C and meeting up with Philadelphia’s Urban Sketching Group is a nice way to make new friends and have some great fun with other people looking for creative connections. My friends and I have also gotten very into pottery just for fun and it’s great to mess around with something that is a totally different medium and lends itself to a lot of creative flow and focus.

Dream trip?

We are in Japan now which has been a dream of ours to do as a family, so I’m enjoying that at the moment! However I always have a long list of next adventures, Scotland, Australia, Round Top, Argentina, and Thailand are all on my wishlist for next destinations. I’m also hoping to make it to Mumbai on my next India trip.

Dream collaboration?

MacKenzie-Childs

and Barbie are both on my dream wishlist.

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

Wine or a candle (since they are very useful).

Who is your style icon?

I love a lot of 70s’ rock stars – like Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, and Japanese street style

Your favorite up and coming artist?

I love Clare Caulfield’s work

and Anjelica Roselyn

What is your most treasured possession?

It’s hard to pick just one, but I have a heart beaded necklace from Tulum that I love and wear all the time.

What are you reading?

Just finished The Creative Act,

The Fun Habit,

and now I’m reading Before the Coffee Gets Cold

What are you listening to?

Fleetwood Mac, Madeleine Peyroux, or whatever my kids insist on listening to.

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

The English Room is a long time favorite, Architectural Digest India, and I spend a lot of time traveling to take in inspiration – going to art galleries, art and decorative object museums, and taking in the world around me.

Here are a few behind the scenes peeks of the cool studio headquarters in downtown Philadelphia. The magic is made here!

I have been hooked on my Printfresh pajamas for years. I think the poplin is nice and cool.

Here are some of my recent Printfresh Favorites:

Stroll Around Dress in Tiger Queen.  I LOVE the cut of this dress.

High Horse Short PJ set / High Horse Robe

Charming Cheetahs Dress
