Creative Conversation: McNeely Purcell

Happy Monday!

I have a creative designer to introduce you to that is forging her own way in a busy fashion industry.  Her design are unique and as individual as her stellar style.

Enjoy getting to know

McNeely Purcell

Charlotte North Carolina

What is your training?

I have a BS in Nursing from UNC Chapel Hill and a masters in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner – nothing to do with design and fashion!

What inspires you and your designs?

My inspiration comes from a mix of both function and flair. I love to seek out extreme high fashion/runway creativity and design pieces that embody that flair but in a more approachable way. For example, I saw a model sporting birds on her body during a runway event and hence birthed the idea for feathered epaulettes. Other pieces of mcneely purcell are merely a result of function – accessible belt bag, easy-to-throw-on belt – but created with the pizazz of metallics, animal print, etc.

 What is your favorite piece?

I love our fringe collar! It is very comfortable to wear but packs a big punch. It is also versatile – pairing well with a collared blouse or dress, crewneck sweater, or even a simple tee. I like to layer the collar under a jacket or blazer or with a jewelry overlay.

(My favorite too… watch my instagram to see my chic silver fringe collar in Round Top this week)

How has your area influenced your work?

I have met and had the privilege of working with some of the most artistic and creative people in Charlotte. All our products are designed and produced locally – something we are very proud of.  mcneely purcell will never be about mass quantity, as we work to preserve extreme quality and uniqueness.

What is your favorite restaurant in Charlotte?

Stagioni – it’s like going to your home-away-from-home for dinner! So cozy and the most delicious Italian.

What is your favorite cocktail?

Skinny Margarita – with salt! (and a splash of grapefruit if possible!)

How do you balance personal life and work?

Work life balance is tough; however, one of our main family values is “family first,” and I try to abide by that. There are times when my girls (12yo and 10yo) see me working from home or they help with production or packing – and I do strongly feel that is beneficial to some degree – I want to instill in them a strong work ethic. However, I put forth a very concerted effort to put it down when they are home and give them my undivided attention. The struggle is real!

Dream trip?

Africa. I’ve been with my husband, but I hope to take our girls back one day. It is life changing.

Dream commission?

I dream of our fringe collar on Morgane Stapleton (BIG Stapleton fan!!) – would be a dream come true to see her rock it on stage!

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

Anything from R.Runberg makes for a thoughtful, special hostess gift.

I’m also a big candle fan – especially the Nest Pumpkin Chai and the Holiday scents…so those are top of my list right now!

Oh – also love Geometry tea towels!

Who is your style icon?

No name in particular – I just admire anyone who isn’t afraid to rock it – whatever their style or trend may be. Rock the fringe…the colors…the flair. The more unique the better!

Your favorite up and coming designer / artist?

I don’t know if these two are necessarily “up and coming,” but they’re relatively new and two of my faves! Lady Lancaster makes the most amazing, quilted jackets – truly works of art!

And Surya and the Moon jewelry is a fave – such unique and meaningful pieces.

What is your most treasured possession?

As much as I treasure my children, I wouldn’t consider them a “possession” ….so I have to say my most treasured possession is Captain, our 3yo Jack Russel Terrier! He is truly captain of the house! (Holly, I know you can relate!) If only he could talk!

What are you reading?

I just finished Theo of Golden – simply heartwarming and brilliantly written.

What are you listening to?

Love Stapleton, as I mentioned, but I also love country music in general! Also listening to “Good Inside with Dr. Becky,” a recap of the Anxious Generation. (Yikes!)

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

The English Room, of course – especially “Things I Love Thursdays!” I also love Cleerely Stated (she brings the TRUTH!), Neubyrne (talk about flair!), People Mag (must stay up-to-date!), and NYT Style Mag (great inspo) and NYT Cooking!
