Artist Spotlight Series: Wayne Mok
I have another reason for a trip over the pond to see the latest talent in my Artist Spotlight Series…
London, England
What is your training?
I am a graduate of the California College of the Arts and the San Francisco Art Institute, currently based in London. I also have a degree in Mathematics from Warwick University.
What inspires you and your designs?
My work is inspired by the great artists of the past and present and by the motivation to create objects that reflect a certain truth, harmony or beauty.
What is your favorite piece?
One of my favorite pieces would be Headstrong #17
How has your area influenced your work?
I totally agree with a quote from D.W Winnicott – “Artists are people driven by the tension between the desire to communicate and the desire to hide”. My studio is in an industrial part of London and the anonymity of the surrounding area enables me to create paintings which I send out to the world.
What is your favorite restaurant in London?
My favorite restaurant in London is Gordon Ramsey’s London House in Battersea- currently exhibiting some of my paintings.
What is your favorite cocktail?
How do you balance personal life and work?
I meditate every morning – it helps me to focus on what I need to do for the day.
Dream trip?
A hike in Tibet with Robert Thurman
Dream commission?
An installation in the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Who is your style icon?
Your favorite up and coming artist?
What is your most treasured possession?
What are you reading?
A Room of One’s Own by Virginia Woolf
What are you listening to?
Early Donna Summer – I have incorporated her emotive lyrics on love and longing in my series of painting “Mineshaft”. Desire is a major motivation within my work and reflection of this desire is hopefully apparent on the canvases.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
Wayne’s paintings have also been featured in Elle Decoration and other publications- please follow and see more on his Facebook album.
