Artist Spotlight Series: Susan Carter Hall
My Artist Spotlight Series feature is another Instagram find that I stumbled across.
Her colorful abstract show in Palm Springs stopped me in my tracks.

What is your training?
I studied Art History at University of Mississippi and went on to study briefly in NYC at Art Students League as well as New York Studio School.I also travelled abroad to study in both Mexico and Italy. Most recently, I studied with the artist Tom Wudl from 2010 to 2012 here in Los Angeles.
What inspires you and your designs?
Nature is a huge part of my inspiration, other artists, the materials I use (paint, paper, mixed media) are inspirational, fashion, sunsets, full moons, rainbows, emojis
What is your favorite piece?
I have a few favorite pieces, one is Ohh Starry Night,
another is What Happened to My Canoe,
and a third would be one from my recent show called The Claims Department.
How has the your area influenced your work?
When I first moved to LA, the California landscape was very influential – as my paintings from pre 2006 are all very green landscapes. Slowly I turned more abstract and I think that abstraction represents some of the frenetic energy of this city, as well as all the media input that comes our way 24/7.
What is your favorite restaurant in LA?
Right now, my favorite restaurant is Katsuya in Studio City. I am addicted.
What is your favorite cocktail?
Rose’ or tequila straight
How do you balance personal life and work?
I don’t always consider my “work” work because it is what I prefer to do for work and play. But to start, I have a studio away from my home, which helps me to shut “work” off at the end of the day. And then I harass my friends to find time for me.
Dream trip?
I’d like to go on a small boat down the Amazon (with an incredible chef) and stop in remote villages.
Dream commission?
Anything covering a large surface that I have carte blanche with (and if I can create it in an exotic place, even better)
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I only recently moved to a place where I can host parties, so, so far my favorite thing to give is good company, good food, and creative vibes. I also like to connect creative people, so perhaps that is my gift.

Your favorite up and coming artist?
Fortunately, we are exposed to so many great artist these days through social media, but to choose just one, I recently discovered Helen Johnson’s work and it blows my mind.
What is your most treasured possession?
My dogs Pierre Mon Frère Bonnard
and Cindy Lou
What are you reading?
I could make something up, but you caught me in a non reading month due to having just had a solo show I was working towards. Ill gear up for summer reading soon. Suggestions welcome.
What are you listening to?
Milli Vanilli Pandora station and very excited to start the podcast S-Town
