Artist Spotlight Series: Sally King Benedict
I am thrilled to feature Sally King Benedict. I have long been a fan and collector of her work. Her recent cover feature and story in Domino magazine has pushed her to the next level as a household name for the design set.
Atlanta, Georgia
What is your training?
BA in Studio Art from the College of Charleston.
Summer School at Central St. Martins in London.
What inspires you and your designs?
All aspects of my life spill into my work. Inspiration could come anywhere from a longing to be somewhere or travel to, from a simple color or shape, to the way I feel that day in the studio. The way I create is best achieved by actually painting or drawing and figuring out what should become of a piece rather than waiting or searching for inspiration.
What is your favorite piece?
It’s typically the most recent piece I decide to keep for our own collection. That currently being “Grandaddy Palms”
How has the your area influenced your work?
Green goes a long way in my overall happiness. I love the trees, grass, flora and fauna of Atlanta. The landscapes of this city definitely influence my work.
What is your favorite restaurant in Atlanta?
Jalisco’s Mexican Restaurant. I can never get enough.
What is your favorite cocktail?
How do you balance personal life and work?
See answer to above.
Dream trip?
Dream commission?
A Royal Commission. (I hope Kate reads this:)
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
A great candle or maybe a portrait sketch depending on their sense of humor!
Who is your style icon?
Leandra Medine – The Man Repeller
Your favorite up and coming artist?
My two-year-old son! Hahaha, no but seriously. All my spare time is spent studying him.
What is your most treasured possession?
Notes on the fridge from my husband.
What are you reading?
Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey
What are you listening to?
Lana Del Ray, The Cardigans, London Grammar, Beastie Boys
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
That’s so HARD! I cant possibly name every favorite, but I love my daily check-in with the blog www.barebeauty.com Its personal, informative, and so well written by one of my best friends in Charleston.
And of course DOMINO magazine.
