Artist Spotlight Series: Maura Segal
I have another wonderful artist to introduce you to in this week’s Artist Spotlight Series feature.
I was immediately drawn to the color and calm found in the elliptically soothing works of this talent.
Enjoy getting to know
Los Angeles, California
What is your training?
I have a degree in graphic design from California State University, Northridge and since then have been developing my own style without any further formal training.
What inspires you and your designs?
I am deeply inspired by the Los Angeles landscape and lifestyle, from the sun-drenched plants to the bustling network of intertwining urban roads and intersections. I feel a relationship between these coexisting elements reflected in the juxtaposition of dense, geometric paper forms and the free, expressive and rhythmic lines.
What is your favorite piece?
Boomerang, I love the power of this piece.
What is your favorite restaurant in LA ?
Matsuhisa, the best sushi in Los Angeles!
What is your favorite cocktail?
A perfectly refreshing drink.
How do you balance personal life and work?
I don’t. I always feel like I’m not quite doing enough of either one.
Dream trip?
I have always wanted to travel to Greece. I want to island hop with my husband and 3 daughters on a private yacht, and will eat lots of feta cheese, pita bread and drink the local red wine.
Dream commission?
My dream project is to create art for a very large public space and in a major metropolitan center.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Artisanal salts and honey.
Who is your style icon?
If the store COS, were a woman, she would be it! I love their streamlined, modern clothing that is so flattering, fresh and clean.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Frank Philipps, his geometric abstraction, color palette and the feeling of spontaneity of his lines and brushstrokes really speaks to me. Feels like Diebenkorn (whose work I admire) must be one of his main inspirations.
What is your most treasured possession?
My mother’s 1950’s woven sewing basket.
What are you reading?
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? By Philip K. Dick which was adopted into the movie, “Blade Runner.”
What are you listening to?
While working, I really enjoy listening to the following podcasts:
“Ted Radio Hour, ”
“Snap Judgement, ”
and “Reveal.”
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
I don’t really follow any blogs at the moment.
The New York Times Sunday T Magazine, Sunday Week In Review section and the Wednesday Food section, are my favorite publications.
