Artist Spotlight Series: Laura Deems
I’m excited to introduce you to a budding artist who is making a name for herself before even completing university. This one to know and one to follow. She’s already been featured in multiple publications and is truly a rising star.
I had the pleasure of hosting her at my shop recently with Brandshop. She is as bright and talented as she is beautiful.
Enjoy getting to know
Athens, Georgia
What is your training?
BFA in Textiles from the University of Georgia. Self taught painter.
What inspires you and your designs?
EVERYTHING. People, spaces, music, juxtapositions. I tend to think of my paintings as a conversation with color and texture. One mark building upon the next. Nothing is preconceived. If I attempt to plan or be “inspired” I freeze up. My making is all about the immediate response.
What is your favorite piece?
Tiger on a Gold Leash
+ A Sally Special (Named after one of my favs and past boss Sally King Benedict)
How has the your area influenced your work?
I love the mix of people that are here in Athens. All the different characters prompt me to imagine their individual stories, which I then respond to and put on canvas. Hence the names of my paintings.
What is your favorite restaurant in Athens?
LRG Provisions in 5 Points
What is your favorite cocktail?
How do you balance personal life and work?
Luckily they go hand in hand for me.
Dream Trip?
Visiting all the small towns and villages in New Zealand
Dream commission?
Painting an enormous abstract piece on a wall in a NY gallery space.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I love giving something that I have made. Whether that be a mini abstract piece, a portrait of them, or a drawing of their home. Anything that shows that I know them.
Who is your style icon?
Your favorite up and coming artist?
OOOH depending on how you define “up and coming” mine would be Karina Bania. She is FAB
What is your most treasured possession?
The notes my friends leave me.
What are you reading?
Currently “Birds of America” by Lorrie Moore.
What are you listening to?
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
I have currently jumped on this skin care kick so my current love is Goop
but also enjoy Man Repeller.
