Brooklyn, New York
What is your training?
I have a BFA in painting from Washington University in St. Louis (with minors in business and Persian), and an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute.
What inspires you and your art?
Stories, memory, beauty, The Met
What is your favorite piece?
I can’t say I have an all-time favorite piece, but “Homeland” is a favorite from the past 6 months. (“Homeland”, oil on paper, 14 x 11 in., 2015)
How has your area influenced your work?
Living in New York has made me a much harder and more focused worker. Being in the middle of the art world gives you access and insight into the lives of so many working artists. When you see how hard everyone is working and how passionate they are about what they’re doing, that inevitably rubs off on you and inspires you to try harder.
What is your favorite restaurant in New York?
I love the Moroccan food at Cafe Mogador in Williamsburg. They have a beautiful indoor garden and amazing salads.
What is your favorite cocktail?
I don’t drink alcohol.
How do you balance personal life and work?
Working remotely and having flexible hours make the balancing act much easier. I don’t know what I would do if I had a 9 to 5 job. Also having a supportive and encouraging husband makes all the difference in the world.
Dream trip?
A month in Bali.
Dream commission?
An installation at the Getty Museum in LA.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Generally, I give a gift if I’m a guest in someone’s house, usually flowers.
Who is your style icon?
Your favorite up and coming artist?
I can’t pick just one…Shara Hughes,
and Alexander Tovborg are my top 5.
What is your most treasured possession?
My photographs
What are you reading?
“Seven Days in the Art World” by Sarah Thornton
What are you listening to?
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
I never read blogs anymore–Instagram has largely replaced the blogosphere in my view. Favorite publications include Frieze,
and Cultured Magazine.
