Artist Spotlight Series: Kate Waddell
Columbus, Georgia seems to breed young female artist talents. Many of the ladies I have featured in this series that work out of Redux Studios in Charleston have come from this town and are creating remarkable works that sell out in moments of their online sales going live.
The latest feature in my Artist Spotlight Series is the next one to watch.
Kate’s sale goes live on July 30th at 10am.
Do not miss it and enjoy getting to know
Charleston, South Carolina
What is your training?
I studied at Rhode Island School of Design for one summer when I was 17 and that is where I fell in love with drawing & the human figure. I also studied for a month at SCAD when I was 16. I went on to earn my bachelor degree in Studio Art at the College of Charleston.
What inspires you and your designs?
I would say that color and light inspire me most. I crave to create things in a new, refreshing way.
Through using different colors and line patterns, I feel that I’m able to create something different.
What is your favorite piece?
“Lonely Lime 24×24”
or “Fresh Squeezed 16×16”
How has the your area influenced your work?
Charleston is full of color and character, so I feel like every time I walk outside I’m hit with new waves of creativity that urge me to keep playing with color and texture.
What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?
My favorite restaurant is definitely Dellz Uptown. Probably because the food is very colorful and full of different flavors!
What is your favorite cocktail?
This isn’t very exciting, but a glass of Rosé is my favorite!
How do you balance personal life and work?
I just graduated in May, so I’m definitely figuring all of that out as I go. So far, I try and remained disciplined in going into the studio every day during the workweek for at least 6 hours. I leave my nights and weekends open for hanging out with friends.
Dream trip?
After living with a French family for a semester in high school, I’ve wanted to take a ‘trip’ to the south of France for a year to paint. I also must go to Bali one day.
Dream commission?
Anything challenging! My most recent favorite was a stained glass window commission. It was so hard and pretty frustrating at times, but I was determined to make it look wonderful. It turned out great!
Read a moving story about this painting and faith on Kate’s blog.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
An orchid is always my go-to!
Who is your style icon?
Audrey Hepburn. Anything chic and/or black.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Helen Brooks.
What is your most treasured possession?
I have a giant box filled with letters that I’ve received since I was 10 years old & photos from all my favorite memories. Nostalgia makes me happy!
What are you reading?
Right now I’m reading “All the Light We Can Not See”
& Timothy Keller’s “Every Good Endeavor”.
What are you listening to?
and Lord Huron.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
Taza,
Here are the fruit settings which I am coveting

Where My Story Begins
Fantastic blog! Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m totally
overwhelmed .. Any suggestions? Thank you!
