Artist Spotlight Series: Jane Denton
Some of my favorite recent artists have been found on Instagram.
My countless late night hours down the rabbit hole have led me to some wonderful finds.
This exceptional talent is no exception. Her colorful needlework art is divine and refreshing.
Enjoy getting to know this kiwi…
Wellington, New Zealand
What is your training?
I completed a Diploma in Art & Creativity which I loved as the focus was on creativity rather than techniques and rules. It gave me a chance to try lots of different mediums but it wasn’t until a few years later that I started stitching.
What inspires you and your designs?
I love colour, shapes and patterns so in everyday life I’m always on the lookout for interesting colour combinations, shapes or patterns that could translate into a piece of art. I’m also inspired by other artists and makers I follow on Instagram….
What is your favorite piece?
It’s forever changing but my current favourite is a new piece called Colourful Grid.
How has your area influenced your work?
I live in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand. It’s a really pretty part of the world and as an artist I really appreciate it’s beauty and often stop to take photos. The seasons influence my work too, I usually feel like working with more intense colours when it’s colder and the softer shades with cotton in the summer.
What is your favorite restaurant in Wellington?
One of my favourite restaurants is Loretta’s in Wellington – beautifully simple décor and AMAZING food.
What is your favorite cocktail?
Mmm I’m actually more of a wine girl!
How do you balance personal life and work?
I struggle with this especially when I’m working on something new and it’s all I want to do. I work all hours of the day around our two children. Lately I’ve been getting up early and working before the rest of the family wakes up, I’m not sure why I didn’t think of this earlier!
Dream trip?
Europe – I never quite got there in my 20’s so we’ll go one day…soon hopefully.
Dream commission?
I would love to create a really large artwork that covered an entire wall, not sure how it would work but would be fun trying!
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Who is your style icon?
I really can’t think of one in particular but I’m definitely influenced by people like stylist Emily Henderson
and Amber Lewis (Amber Interiors) – their styles are quite different but both really beautiful!
Your favorite up and coming artist?
I LOVE ceramics and I really like Paige Jarman‘s new work!
What is your most treasured possession?
Aside from my family it would be all the handmade things in my home – art and ceramics friends have given me over the years and art my children have made.
What are you reading?
The last book I read was Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert – I really enjoyed her ideas on creativity.
And I’m super excited to read my sisters book which is due out at the end of the month called “Whose Mind is it Anyway” published by Penguin USA – a quirky, highly illustrated book about the mind and how to feel calmer.
What are you listening to?
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
and Apartment Therapy.
