Artist Spotlight Series: Jaime Derringer
Jaime Derringer hardly needs introduction but this multi-talented woman sums it up best with…
“Hi, my name is Jaime / art + design lover / Founder + Executive Editor of Design Milk + Dog Milk / orchestrator of awesome / runner / art-maker / poem-writer / food-eater / jewelry-wearer / ball of stress.”
How could you not love her and her work?
San Diego, California
What is your training?
I’m self-taught! I love learning on the fly.
What inspires you and your designs?
Tons of stuff from nature to music to bizarre things like laser-beams, outer space, textiles, and my childhood (the 80s!).
What is your favorite piece? pictures if possible…
My favorite piece is usually the one I’m working on currently, but actually right now I’m just really loving this piece, called Orange Prison. It marks an important change in my work and so I’m grateful for it.
How has the your area influenced your work?
I moved to Southern California a few years ago and it’s totally helped open me up creatively. There is so much nature here and I don’t even need to go that far. Our area is full of trails and mountains, and the ocean is just a 15-minute drive away.
What is your favorite restaurant in San Diego?
We go to a few great Mexican restaurants around here, Roberto’s, Miguel’s… we love burritos! San Diego has the best! You can pretty much get an awesome burrito the size of your head just about anywhere.
What is your favorite cocktail?
I usually stick to white wine, but I’ll drink anything that’s super girly. If it’s pink and is garnished with fruit and an umbrella, then chances are I’ll be ordering another round. :)
How do you balance personal life and work?
If the scales tip in one direction for too long, I make sure they tip in the other direction. There isn’t a perfect balance that’s right in the middle, so I just do my best to fit everything in.
Dream trip?
Yoga and painting in Thailand or Bali.
Dream commission?
A sculpture.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Succulents. They’re easy to maintain, hard to kill, and look great no matter where you put them.
Who is your style icon?
Iris Apfel, Blossom, Clarissa Explains it All, Jem, Dieter from Sprockets, Steve Jobs. And toddlers who dress themselves.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Gosh this is so hard. One that I particularly love is Esther Ruiz – she creates these really cool neon and concrete sculptures.
What is your most treasured possession?
My daughter.
What are you reading?
Unfortunately, just the Internet these days. When I do read, I love biographies and Russian literature.
What are you listening to?
This constantly changes as my taste is very eclectic. Some days it’s old school rap, sometimes freestyle, other times it’s The Decemberists
or Neutral Milk Hotel, and a little bit of techno. I’m all over the place.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
I don’t regularly read many blogs these days because I’ve been so busy with Design Milk,
but I do enjoy some of these: jojotastic, Design Crush, Oh Joy, Doorsixteen, Design*Sponge, Emily Henderson, etc. There are too many good blogs out there to name! I also like to keep up with my favorite magazines online, like Dwell.
I spend most of my time on Twitter and Instagram. And I spend a lot of time looking at recipes on Pinterest.
