Artist Spotlight Series: Dorothy Shain
I was lucky enough to meet Dorothy Shain in Charleston at Redux Studios a few weeks ago and then enjoy her company at an arts dinner in Charlotte last week.
This artist is on the rise! Her abstracts were the talk of the magical night. A few even went home with the guests of The SoGood dinner hosted by Couture Knots and styled by Jamie Meares of Furbish Studio catered by the incredible Porcupine Provisions.
It was a terrific evening enjoying the artistic spirit and creative in us all.
Enjoy getting to know
Charleston, South Carolina
What is your training?
I attended Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas on a fine arts scholarship. I received my bachelors of art in studio art with a focus in painting.
What inspires you and your designs?
Travel and meeting new people are a large source of inspiration for my projects and creative direction. For me, one conversation or one trip to another artist’s studio can trigger new ideas and cause my wheels to start spinning.
What is your favorite piece? pictures if possible…
Currently, my favorite pieces in my studio are my hand dyed linens full of indigo colors and soft pastels. I love them and I love the connection indigo has to the south.
How has the your area influenced your work?
The lowcountry has hugely affected my work. The creative energy and entrepreneurial spirit that flows through Charleston has found its way to my door and inspires me on a daily basis.
What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?
Oh lord, this is a hard one and a large reason I moved here. I have a thing for good food and Charleston provides an abundance of that. The best meal I have eaten recently was at Chez Nous. It was heavenly.
What is your favorite cocktail?
My favorite cocktail is hands down, a good margarita. Fresh squeezed lime juice, agave and Casamigos Tequila (it might have something to do with Mr. George Clooney owning the brand). Oh, and lots of salt.
How do you balance personal life and work?
Since becoming a full time artist separation of life & work does not exist for me, which I love. Everything is intertwined. I often look to yoga & running as a way to keep my thoughts in line.
Dream trip?
I have been dying to take a trip to the Texas hill country & Marfa.
Dream commission?
Anything for Darius Rucker.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
My mom’s homemade granola. People go bonkers for it!
Who is your style icon?
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Amanda Greenley, the founder of Tink + Tiger Pajamas. Her eye for design & color is incredible.
Also, my long time friend Delaney Maher. She is one of the most talented graphic designers I know.
What is your most treasured possession?
A piece of jewelry you will often see me wearing when I’m not painting. It was a cufflink of my great grandfather’s that my mom turned in to a ring for me.
What are you reading?
Setting the Table by Danny Meyer
What are you listening to?
A playlist called “90s Country” on Spotify
