Artist Spotlight Series: Catherine Jones
Meet the latest talent in my Artist Spotlight Series bursting onto the art scene with her wonderful abstract works and her very chic Fiddle Leaf Fig Series and much more.
Birmingham, Alabama
What is your training?
No formal training except for art classes in high school and college.
What inspires you and your designs?
Honestly, just about anything. Anything from a crisp white button-down to a killer color combination. I am constantly flirting with the fine line of bold simplicity. That contradiction intrigues me to no end, and I strive to find the perfect balance between the two. My mother was an interior designer so I grew up watching her consider all aspects of a house, and I find that I’m naturally inclined to draw inspiration from interiors, pulling from lines, fabric, you name it.
What is your favorite piece?
That’s tricky, I get pretty attached to most all of my pieces. Right now it’s this one: I’m in love with this light blue currently, and I used to get nervous to use red in paintings, obviously I conquered my fear!
How has the your area influenced your work?
Birmingham is a great mix of old-school and trendy. I love to drive through each neighborhood and picture what kind of piece would go in each house. Due to the mix, it opens the door to so much inspiration for the direction of pieces, which can range from straight forward botanicals to bold abstract pieces.
What is your favorite restaurant in (your city)?
What is your favorite cocktail?
I love love fresh squeezed grapefruit and Titos topped with a lime.
How do you balance personal life and work?
That’s something I have not necessarily conquered yet, but I’m learning everyday 🙂 My studio is in our home, so it can be difficult to shut off at a certain time. Usually, after a tight deadline or large production period, I have all of our friends over and take a breather from painting around the clock. I love to entertain and gather all of my favorite people that I may have not seen in a few weeks.
Dream trip?
Morocco with my husband.
Dream commission?
An entire gallery wall including framing for Grant K. Gibson, a designer I constantly have my eye on.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I love to give coffee table books!
Who is your style icon?
Lauren Hutton in the 70’s
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Can’t just choose one: Cate West Zahl,
and Kristen Giorgi & Lauren Naples of NG Collective Studio
What is your most treasured possession?
My engagement ring, it has been in my husband’s family since the early 1900’s.
What are you reading?
Black and White (and a Bit in Between) Celerie Kemble
What are you listening to?
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
Oh goodness where to begin: La Dolce Vita blog,
Tatler (I love all the British names in the “Social” sectoin)
, flower,
and many many others!
