What is your training?
I graduated from Rhodes College in 2009 with a degree in Art History. I took some studio courses in college but was much more focused on Art History than art making at the time. After college I got a job outside of the art world but continued to take drawing and painting classes for years. I fell in love with painting and finally allowed myself to pursue a life as a working artist. It has taken some time but I can’t imagine it any other way now.
What inspires you and your designs?
My work is inspired by the variety of forms I see on daily walks: the foliage, a glimpse into a neighbor’s back garden, and the leafy shadows cast on the pavement. I am drawn to the delicate appearance, implicit strength, patient and confident growth of plant life.
What is your favorite piece?.
Garden Windows. 20″ x 20″, acrylic on paper.
This is a relatively new piece from a collection focused on the growth we crave, the paths we choose, and the process of becoming. My aim here was to depict the wild growth that is waiting for us, beyond the external or personal barriers we sometimes hold on to.
How has your area influenced your work?
I definitely pull from the nature that surrounds me. I live in the city, but while midtown Memphis is bustling, it is also quite verdant. The trees are very important to us.
Creativity is an important part of this city’s history and culture. There is a wonderful art scene here. In addition to commercial galleries and museums, we have some really great non-profit galleries, amazing public art and citizens who really value and fight for the arts.
What is your favorite restaurant in Memphis?
Memphis has so many great spots. For a date night or dinner with friends I love Bounty on Broad. For something more casual or takeout, Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana.
What is your favorite cocktail?
A French 75. It’s fizzy and bright so it always feels like a special treat.
How do you balance personal life and work?
Oh dear, it has become very mushed together. My studio has been moved to our living room and I paint when my 18 month old daughter sleeps. Balance has come out of necessity. If I don’t exercise or take time to have a phone call with family and friends, I will become very anxious. The house is almost always messy and more structure wouldn’t hurt, but for now, I just feel so lucky to be creating for a living.
Dream trip?
There are so many places I want to experience but on the top of my list are Italy and Greece. I studied abroad in Florence and would love to go back and experience it with my husband. I’d honestly go almost anywhere these days though. As soon as things open up enough, I’m taking a solo trip to the Crystal Bridges Museum in Arkansas.
Dream commission?
Lately I’ve been aching to make something BIG. My pieces are typically smaller as dictated by my time and space but I’d love to have an excuse to do something large and bold for a client. I really enjoy collaborating with clients and it has been such a rewarding part of this work. I’d love to collaborate more with other creatives as well.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
A bottle of wine or a small ceramic piece from a local artist.
Who is your style icon?
Jane Birkin. It’s as much about her demeanor as the clothes. My personal style is pretty utilitarian these days so I tend to go the “effortless” route 😉
I also like Dakota Johnson’s style. It’s classic and accessible with an edge.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Carolyn Misterek – There’s a quiet tension in her pieces, which are graceful and textural.
Alexa Guariglia – She is not up and coming but her work is so amazing and I would love to see it in person someday.
What is your most treasured possession?
One item that is very special to me is this hand painted, egg-shaped box I keep on my nightstand. My great-grandmother gave it to my mother when she was a girl and it was passed down to me a few years ago.
What are you reading?
I just finished Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury which was wonderful.
I am now on to Diary of a Provincial Lady by E.M. Delafield which is hilarious.
My mom and I have a very slow paced book club. Every few chapters we have a FaceTime call and chat about it.
What are you listening to?
There is always a lot of music playing in our home but this week I’ve been listening to Mattiel, Kevin Morby, Florence and the Machine, and The Artist/Mother Podcast.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
The Design Files – I am so attracted to the design and art of Australia. I guess go ahead and add that to my dream trip list as well.
AD, Domino, and Milieu magazines are always a nice treat.
