What is your training? 

I only took art classes in High School, which usually puts one into the ‘untrained’ category, but we had a wonderful separate art school in our town that allowed you to take general classes for a few years and then specialize in one practice. I chose ‘graphic design’ which in those days meant learning how to make woodcuts, linocuts, silkscreening – nothing digital. I wish I’d studied art at university but I chose international relations because I loved traveling and thought being a diplomat sounded cool. I only started painting 4 years ago after my son was born. 

What inspires you and your designs?

Everyone says ‘nature’ and I’m afraid I’m no different. 

 

What is your favorite piece?

As a new artist, I hope my favorite piece is still to come, but I’ve started working towards a new landscape series that I’ve really enjoyed creating. I’m planning to paint them much larger, which is new for me. 

How has your area influenced your work?

The mountains, rocks, hills and water of The Bay Area can be seen in most of my work. 

What is your favorite restaurant in San Francisco ?

Out the Door in San Francisco is still my favorite after 7 years of living here, but I haven’t been there in ages. We love cooking at home and have a 3 year old, so we hardly ever eat out these days. 

What is your favorite cocktail?

Dirty martini

How do you balance personal life and work?

I’m beginning to think there’s no such thing. Especially right now. 

Dream trip?

Ooh, so so many. I love traveling and have lived in quite a few different countries. As a South African, I’m biased, but Cape Town is still my favorite city in the world. Everyone should visit! Since living in SF we’ve spent more time in Mexico and I’m dying to get back there as soon as we can travel again. 

Dream commission?

I love that a lot of interior designers buy my finished work, but I’d love to be more involved in the process from the beginning – and collaborate on something especially for the home they’re working on. 

 

Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?

I love baking and gardening, so probably a cake decorated with flowers. 

Who is your style icon?

I have very stylish friends, so I’m going to say them 🙂 

 

Your favorite up and coming artist?

Right now I’m loving the expressive works of K’era Morgan, who makes beautiful paintings, collages – and also textile works. 

 

What is your most treasured possession?

Ah it used to be my grandmother’s brooch that I’d inherited, but it was stolen from our home while we were traveling, which was very sad. I must say, I get a lot of joy out of my Le Creuset pots. They are beautiful to look at and I use them daily. 

 

What are you reading?

“Life with Picasso”, which I’m finding a bit difficult to plough through.

I recently read “Girl, Woman, Other” by Bernadine Evaristo though and it was excellent.

What are you listening to?

On heavy rotation at the moment is Kasey Musgraves

and Rayland Baxter

– but I mostly listen to mixes I’ve created on Spotify which contain a bit of everything. 

What are your favorite blogs / publications?

I prefer reading on paper, so I read more books than blogs.
