Artist Spotlight Series: Kate Schelter
I am beyond excited to share this artist on the day her long awaited book releases.
I have long been a fan of her classically chic work and I am sure you will be too.
Enjoy getting to know uber talented
New York, New York
“Kate Schelter is a New York City based illustrator, creative director and stylist—owner of the luxury brand consultancy that bears her name—who is always armed with palette, paper and brushes on her travels. Taking a cue from her styling work, she is attracted to subject matters that she admires in real life and that she owns, like a red lipstick or an old pair of shoes, as well as objects found in nature.”
What is your training?
I studied graphic design at Rhode Island School of Design and studied for a year at their campus in Rome.
What inspires you and your designs?
I paint what I love—it comes from my gut.
What is your favorite piece?
Impossible to decide! That is why I love my new book Classic Style because it ties up all my work into a nice bow. I am happy for my work to go to a good home, but occasionally there are pieces that are hard for me to sell. My early watercolors are filled with memories of my own artistic path of self discovery (that I could paint again after a 15 year career as a fashion stylist). I keep my favorite paintings for my daughter, but I want my work to leave my studio and have a life in someone’s house where it will be admired and loved.
What is your favorite restaurant in NYC?
and Café Mogador are my favorites in New York City.
What is your favorite cocktail?
Moscow Mule
How do you balance personal life and work?
I talk about this in my book: structure gives me the confidence and the space to be creative. Childcare and schedules are so important to me. I love being a mother and I am passionate about my work—it’s important to set an example for my daughter that work can be joyous and fulfilling.
Dream trip?
Amalfi Coast
Dream commission?
Kate Schelter x D. Porthault
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
I love to give fresh flowers. I live by the flower market so I try to stop in often. Or I call in the big guns from Tin Can Studios when I need a show-stopper.
Who is your style icon?
My mom and Grace Kelly.
