Ann Arbor, Michigan
What is your training?
I began painting in nursery school. I was taught oil painting at my public high school. I minored in painting at American University in Washington DC, while studying film production.
I then, studied painting privately, in California, for 8 years with my mentor and teacher Kwok Wai Lau, from China. This is were I blossomed.
What inspires you and your designs?
I am inspired by the abstract expressionist painters, especially Joan Michell and Richard Diebenkorn and Willem Dekooning.
My inspiration comes out of my own inner world. How I filter my experiences and how I feel about my surroundings help to create my paintings. When you are a abstract painter you cannot hide from your paintings. The painting will always reveal the truth about you. It is a very mystical and mysterious relationship. Inner beauty will create outer beauty. Inner turmoil will show itself in some way. It is a living medium if you are in touch with this vibration.
What is your favorite piece?
I love them all equally, like my children. However, I continue to aspire to new levels and when I achieve a greater height that painting becomes my very favorite.
Here are some:
How has the your area influenced your work?
I paint in two studios. North in the summers and South in the winters. My surroundings definitely influence my work because I experience the light as being very different. In Michigan, the light is rich and dense, with a golden quality. In Florida, the light has a high vibration that brings out light lavenders, light blues and whites. Both environments are a joy and challenge to create in.
What is your favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor, Michigan?
I designed and painted the art work for this restaurant!!
What is your favorite cocktail?
Or a dry Italian Borolo
How do you balance personal life and work?
I don’t, just have to go for it all.
Dream trip?
Around the world for one year on a nice ship.
Dream commission?
Any large commission for a home, restaurant, corporate space or museum. Creating art that is unique and special for one client is very fun.
