While wandering Palm Springs to find the fabulous exteriors and divine doors we happened upon a yellow door that forced us to come to an abrupt stop. The door was slightly open and a young lady walking up to the house offered me a view into the courtyard.  I immediately jumped at the opportunity to see inside this jewel.

I later was having drinks with my talented designer friend Christopher Kennedy at The Parker.  I showed him my favorite door to find out the the house was owned by his good friends and was recently published in Palm Springs style.  I searched out the the interiors online to my delight.  

I was wowed by the nod to the mid century with a swanky and colorful twist.

 Every once in a while you come across a home that immediately draws you in and changes your mood for the better, which is precisely the impact of the Palm Springs residence of interior designer Pjetur Sigurdson and husband Dimitri James, founder of Skinn Cosmetics. This phenomenon is so established with the property that it has been nicknamed “the Sweethearts” home because so many people have fallen in love here.

Built in 1969 in the Indian Canyons neighborhood, the home was renovated by Thomboy Properties prior to the couple’s purchase in 2012, so very little structural work was necessary, and Sigurdson and James set out to incorporate their personality through the design of the home’s interiors, as well as a few exterior design additions. Blue laser cut panels were custom made for the front of the home with a midcentury-inspired star pattern, and the front double doors, originally brown, were painted a vibrant yellow that is then carried through the yellow and blue color palette of the rest of the home, including custom made yellow doors on all of the interior rooms. Upon entering the first set of front doors, you are met with a front-loaded pool, which ensures privacy since the home is located on a golf course. Another set of ornate yellow doors leads into the main living space of the home, which is bright and open, with a wall of glass leading out to the back patio.

Sigurdson, who owns an interior design firm called Hollywood Home, describes the design aesthetic of the home as “midcentury groovy glam, ” mixing classic midcentury finds with fun, colorful and glamorous items that are sourced locally, as well as online and during the duo’s travels all over the world. The pair share similar design tastes, which helps ensure that James will appreciate Sigurdson’s bold design choices.

Some items, like the blue outdoor sofa on the back patio, are custom designed by Sigurdson to ensure the perfect fit, aesthetic and functionality for the space. While stylish enough for the glamorous interior living room, the 10-foot-long sofa is covered in Sunbrella fabric in order to withstand the harsh outdoor elements of desert living.

“I designed this home to be relaxing for the two of us, but also to entertain and have a space that can be filled with friends, life and fun, ” says Sigurdson. The main living area includes a chic bar and large formal dining area, perfect for a dinner party or cocktail soirée. Guests are unlikely to ever want to leave once they spot the home’s guest bedrooms, which are luxuriously decorated and each feature private patios.

Sigurdson is currently in the process of recreating a large, entertainer’s dream of a backyard and pool at a beautiful Alexander home in Vista Las Palmas, and is also expanding his design practice to include restaurants and retail spaces.

“Easy living while surrounding yourself with beauty is what Palm Springs style means to me, ” says Sigurdson.  “A carefree ease with bold ideas that make people just want to smile.” Or fall in love.

Shelving in the home office is filled with vintage finds collected by the couple from all over the world. The painting in the center was created by James using makeup (James is the founder of Skinn Cosmetics).

The garage, which also serves as Sigurdson’s design studio, is papered in the same Martinique wallpaper as the Beverly Hills Hotel, and the ceiling is covered in paper blooms from the couple’s recent wedding, created by Beverly Hills florist Eric Buterbaugh.

The home’s “Cabana Room, ” lined in custom curtains, opens up to the pool area. The brass palm trees are a vintage find, with custom benches and reupholstered matching sofas, and a painting by Mia Luzajic.
