Artist Spotlight Series: Lori Glavin
A few weeks ago Mary Rountree Moore mentioned a favorite artist that was new to me in her Artist Spotlight Series feature.
I reached out and as it turns out I have a new favorite artist too.
I am smitten with the colorful abstract works of
Norwalk, Connecticut
What is your training?
I have a BFA from Syracuse University. I worked as a graphic designer in New York City and when we moved to Connecticut 20 + years ago, started painting.
What inspires you and your designs?
Everyday life. I often use found objects from my home in my work — from envelopes to vintage fabrics. I incorporate sewing into my printmaking and collages. And in my abstract oil paintings, you’ll see references to the tabletop, stacked objects and the landscape of beach and country.
What is your favorite piece?
Take Me There, Oil on Canvas, 66 x 48”
The Big Beach, 2016, Oil on Paper, 50” x 38”
Back to School, Oil on Paper, 50” x 38”
How has your area influenced your work?
We have a “fixer-upper” farm in Upstate New York that has been a project for over 25 years — the colors, the landscape, the rock walls and the gardens there keep appearing in my work.
What is your favorite restaurant in (your city)?
Brushlands Eating House in Bovina Center, NY is my favorite night out!
What is your favorite cocktail?
Usually I stick with wine, but my brother in law makes a mean Dark N’ Stormy. So good!
How do you balance personal life and work?
I work really hard at making time for both, there are so many things I want to do… In and out of the studio.
Dream trip?
New Zealand. And I would love to paint in Ireland some day.
Dream commission?
A huge series of paintings without any restrictions!
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Seasonal cut flowers — pure happiness.
Who is your style icon?
This isn’t something I’ve ever thought much about! But Patti Smith’s style from the 70’s still inspires.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Annie Hayes, she is a wonderful fiber artist.
What is your most treasured possession?
My family… not that I possess them… but I sure like having them around!
What are you reading?
I recently read Purity by Jonathan Franzen
and am currently re-reading a favorite — Old School by Tobias Wolff.
What are you listening to?
and lots of old favorites on Pandora — I love how I can create a station to suit my mood
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
Studio and Garden, written by artist Altoon Sultan,
and BrainPickings.org are two I really enjoy.
