Artist Spotlight Series: Allison Meyler
I have another art crush.
Enjoy getting to know the latest rising star in the abstract art arena with this weeks Artist Spotlight Series feature
Ridgefield, Connecticut
What is your training?
I was an Art History / Studio Art major at Wellesley College. I also spent a semester in Rome at the Tyler School of art.
What inspires you and your designs?
I’m inspired by all sorts of sources: travel, nature, colors, patterns, works by other artists
What is your favorite piece? pictures if possible…
Paintings are like children – it’s impossible and unfair to choose a favorite! So, I have attached a few – you choose!
These are three “cut outs” I did from paintings. A dear friend of mine framed all three in a row like this and I love how it came out:
Another “triptych” I sort of forgot about, but really like:
This one is recent, and for sale on Serena & Lily:
And I must like this one, as it’s hanging in my house:
How has the your area influenced your work?
I am definitely influenced by my surroundings. Right now I live in Connecticut where the stonewalls and barns are particularly beautiful. But I grew up in Maine, which is also a beautiful place, and I still reference the ocean, and stone beaches there. Travel has also had a huge influence on my work – Italy and California are two of my other favorite places. Regardless, I like to create a sense of place or space, whether real or imagined, in my work. In doing so, I find that a common visual vocabulary emerges – bold shapes and loose line work.
What is your favorite restaurant in your area?
Buvette, in NYC, is the first place that pops into my mind! I never get sick of the cozy space and the small plates of delicious/decadent food! The chocolate mousse is over the top.
What is your favorite cocktail?
The cosmo, is “my” drink, but I dabble in mixology 🙂
How do you balance personal life and work?
It’s hard, and sometimes not that gracefully! I also have a full-time job with Morgan Stanley and am the mom of 13 year old twins, so I am constantly juggling. Really, the only time I ever get to paint is on the weekends, which I try to do as much as I can.
Dream trip?
Italy is always my dream trip, but I have been there…so if I had to pick another place I’d say I’d love to go to Ibiza with my family to visit great friends there.
Dream commission?
I’d love to have my paintings all over the walls of a really cool restaurant – a place with clean lines, lots of light and big white walls!
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Zinnias from my garden, in a Mason jar
Who is your style icon?
Jackie O is just so cool to me. And Audrey Hepburn. I guess I love the 1960s.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
I can’t say I have one, but we do have a wonderful contemporary art museum in our town (The Aldrich, Ridgefield, CT) where I love to go on a regular basis. I was recently there and heard Ruby Sky Stiler speak about her current installation. Her work was very inspiring (and I love her name)!
What is your most treasured possession?
My wedding ring!
What are you reading?
I just finished The Folded Clock, by Heidi Julavits.
The Girl on the Train is next up.
What are you listening to?
I do tend to get obsessed with one artist, and listen until I get sick of them. At the moment, it’s the new album from the Punch Brothers, The Phosphorescent Blues. I recently saw them play in NYC – they’re awesome!
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
& Food52 – I also love to cook!
