Stunning TAXIDERMY Handbags and more…
You need to know Taxidermy. This brand has me swooning over their chic handbags and more.
Handmade handbags and bow ties from exotic leathers.
Show some skin this season and get to know the lady behind the brand, Amy Driggers.
What is your training?
I graduated with a BA in Psychology from Clemson University. After graduating, I managed a boutique and ran their wholesale operation. I made a lot of contacts, and learned a lot about manufacturing while I was working for them. I have always had a love of exotic skins, specifically python, and decided to pursue my passion and create my own line.
What inspires you and your designs?
I love rich colors. I am constantly looking at my pantone book for new color ideas. My designs are inspired by classic handbag shapes. I want to make pieces that are timeless and that my clients can wear forever.
What is your favorite piece?
I love them all, but if I had to pick a favorite piece, it would be the natural python Antler box clutch. I reach for it time and time again. It’s always my go-to bag for a night out on the town.
How has your area influenced your work?
I live right outside of DC. The area is so diverse and transitional. But, it is also very conservative. I veer towards conservative handbag shapes and make them more interesting with my color and finish choices. I love the new neons and metallic finishes that I’ve been working on.
5 What is your favorite restaurant in D.C.?
I love Proof in DC. It’s a great spot with a beautiful atmosphere and even better wine list.
What is your favorite cocktail?
I love a good glass of champagne. I’m not too picky, but would say that Veuve Clicquot is my favorite.
How do you balance personal life and work?
It’s hard sometimes. My husband also owns his own business, so we are both pretty busy. We try to schedule a datenight once a week, even if it’s just a movie night at home.
Dream trip?
Anywhere and everywhere. I love to travel, and my list of places I want to see is always changing. Right now, I would say that I’d love to go to Thailand. A friend went on her honeymoon, and since then, I’ve wanted to go.
Dream commission?
I love doing anything that’s new. A lot of my business comes from custom orders, and my clients are always surprising me with new requests.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
A great bottle of champagne. I think everyone should have one ready at all times. You never know when life will give you a reason to celebrate
Who is your style icon?
Right now, I love Blake Lively‘s style. She always looks put together, and can really pull off just about anything.
Your favorite up and coming designer?
I heard about 5:31 Jérôme on Refinery 29, and since then, I’ve been kind of obsessed with his line. I love all the glamour and embellishment.
What is your most treasured possession?
I love my engagement and wedding rings, and the first tote I ever made. It’s black python, and I still use it nearly every day.
What are you reading?
I just finished #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso. It’s really inspiring.
What are you listening to?
I listen to NPR on the way to the office every morning. I love talk radio. We are going to Coachella in April, so I really have to start listening to some of the artists that we’ll see there. But, I really find talk radio very soothing during my commute.
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
I follow a lot of bloggers. My current favorites are Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad
and The Man Repeller.
I also love Deux Moi’s instagram account.
I subscribe to People, Bazaar, Garden and Gun, and Marie Claire. I look forward to getting those, but I don’t have much time to devote to magazines, so I’m usually an issue or two back.

What about the environmental impact of these “exotic” (often a synonym of “endangered”) hides? This is something I desperately wish you’d asked in the interview, especially since it doesn’t appear to have been addressed on the Taxidermy website.
Are these animals wild-caught? How, and by whom? Are there quotas in place to ensure that species are not excessively depleted for the pursuit of admittedly adorable handbags? Any chance you can reach out to the designer to ask these questions?

I just saw this question which has probably been answered by now but if it hasn’t … python is an invasive species in The Everglades. Destroying everything and upsetting the balance. They breed with other large snakes and are killing off other species. Completely out of control. Nothing stops them. Invading other water sources, rivers and lakes in South Florida. The St John’s river flows north. Give that some thought. Encourage purchasing python.
