Artist Spotlight Series: Ally White
Enjoyed getting to know the latest talent out of Athens, Georgia. Ally White is certainly one to watch with her colorful, bold and thought provoking works.
Atlanta, Georgia
What is your training?
I did set-design for the theatre productions at my high school, and then I earned my BFA in Painting at the University of Georgia in 2013.
What inspires you and your designs?
So much — suburbia, the idea of the exotic, animals, my mom, the human body, color, bad paintings and good paintings, love and plants.
What is your favorite piece?
This painting, “The Good Sister, ” because I owe it so much for helping launch my career. It was on the cover of New American Paintings last summer. And also, newer paintings such as Horse Girl and The Listener.
How has your area influenced your work?
I’ve lived in the same area my whole life, and it’s not so much the imagery that the South provides as it is my relationships with other people in my community that influences my work. I’m more likely to be inspired by a feeling, whether it’s one I have about myself or about someone else, than something visual.
What is your favorite restaurant in Atlanta?
El Taco in Virginia Highlands. I’m there probably once a week. They make the best salsa verde I’ve ever had!
What is your favorite cocktail?
A dark and stormy — I’m simple.
How do you balance personal life and work?
I don’t really feel a separation between the two. I surround myself with other creatives in a very supportive network. Plus, painting never feels like work.
Dream trip?
Machu Picchu is on the top of my list!
Dream commission?
I don’t really have one. I usually dislike commissions because I feel too much pressure to please someone else, which inhibits the work.
Your favorite host / hostess gift to give?
Some flowers or freshly baked goods. Or more realistically — beer.
Who is your style icon?
Sophia Amoruso. She’s a style icon but also a role model. Her book #GIRLBOSS is on the top of my reading to-do list.
Your favorite up and coming artist?
Elliot Walters. Her process is both painterly and sculptural and it’s so fascinating and refreshing.
What is your most treasured possession?
A 1940’s opal ring that my lovely BF got me a couple years ago. It’s my most prized possession because I wear it every day no matter what.
What are you reading?
I just finished Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind of Girl and it was so enjoyable, funny and sincere.
What are you listening to?
Dolly Parton, Future Islands, Grimes, Surfer Blood
What are your favorite blogs / publications?
BOMB magazine, New American Paintings, and Daily Serving
