Penland School of Crafts
Tuesday I made a pilgrimage to Penland School of Crafts to be enveloped in creative artistic talent.
Next summer I MUST go take a course… Summer camp for the artist in me.
Who is joining me?
Penland School of Crafts is an international center for craft education dedicated to helping people live creative lives. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, Penland offers one-, two-, and eight-week workshops in books & paper, clay, drawing, glass, iron, metals, photography, printmaking and letterpress, textiles, and wood. The school also offers artists’ residencies, community collaboration programs, and a gallery and information center.
your first stop should always be ….
The Penland Gallery and Visitors Center is one of the finest showcases for contemporary craft in the Southeast. Attracting about 14, 000 visitors each year, the gallery displays and sells work by current and former Penland instructors, resident artists, and students from around the country. A knowledgeable staff provides information about craft processes, the school’s programs, the artists, and studios in the area.
Here are a few snaps of my day….I needed more time.

And then a visit to Jane Peisner…
and a trip to Mica Gallery in Bakersville…loving the Pam Brewer works…
and our last stop was to my FAVORITE glassblower Billy Bernstein. He and his lovely wife were so warm (as in glassblowers studios are HOT) and welcoming.
gotta love the self portraits that look very Jerry Garcia in glass.

and here is my haul… I could have bought so much more!!!! I did order 6 more of my favorite stemless wine glasses from Bernstein Glass.
